📖 Our Story
In 2008, Aweys Ali arrived in Louisville with a heart full of purpose. He witnessed African families struggling without a central place to gather, grow, and thrive.
From this vision, the Afrikana Community Center was born — a place where African immigrants, refugees, and descendants from Somalia, Sudan, Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Kenya, and beyond could connect, celebrate their heritage, and build new lives.

Aweys Ali
Founder & Executive Director

Aweys Ali is a Somali-American community leader, author, and the founder of Afrikana Community Center Inc. After arriving in the United States in 2004 and settling first in Atlanta, Georgia before relocating to Louisville, Kentucky in 2008, Aweys witnessed firsthand the challenges facing African immigrant and refugee families. With over 10 years of grassroots community service, he founded Afrikana in 2025 to create a permanent home for African families in Louisville. He is also the Secretary of Masjid Abubakar Islamic Center of Louisville and the author of several Islamic books including The Power of Istighfar.
